Within the art world, Molly Malone Cook made her reputation as an early advocate of photography as an art form; she was a champion of the work of now-famous photographers, including Edward Steichen, Eugene Atget, Berenice Abbott, Minor White, Ansel Adams, Harry Callahan, and W. Eugene Smith. There are famous faces here as well, captured by Cook's camera, among them Walker Evans, Robert Motherwell and Henry Geldzahler, the first curator of twentieth-century art at the Metropolitan Museum.
Cook and Oliver also lived among writers, and Cook caught several on film, including Lorraine Hansberry and Norman Mailer. Other artists and dozens of wonderful characters and scenes are also immortalized by Cook's unfailing eye for telling detail and composition. Oliver writes of Cook's work, the people they knew, and the places they visited or lived. The poet's beautiful text captures not only the vivifying qualities of her partner's work, but the texture of their shared world. In Mary Oliver's words, Cook taught the beginner poet "to see, with searching attention and compassion."

Review
"Cook was evidently an accomplished printer as well as a photographer and the images have been beautifully reproduced…In a photo which Cook took of Jean Cocteau dining in Venice in May 1954—one of her several fine portraits of celebrities—we glimpse the photographer silhouetted in an oval mirror on the wall behind the French poet. Her own face is hidden by her upheld camera but we sense that she controls the composition. In this selection of Cook’s work, so admirable in intention, she herself remains something of a shadow in a mirror. But perhaps, given her honesty of eye, we come to know her best by seeing the world as it once appeared through the discretion of her lens."—Eric Ormsby, The New York Sun (December 5, 2007)
"Mary Oliver. In a region that has produced most of the nation's poet laureates, it is risky to single out one fragile 71-year-old bard of Provincetown. But Mary Oliver, who won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1983, is my choice for her joyous, accessible, intimate observations of the natural world. Her Wild Geese has become so popular it now graces posters in dorm rooms across the land. But don't hold that against her. Read almost anything in New and Selected Poems. She teaches us the profound act of paying attention—a living wonder that makes it possible to appreciate all the others."—Renée Loth, Boston Globe
About the Author
Molly Malone Cook (1925–2005), was born in San Francisco. One of the first photographers hired by the Village Voice, in 1960 she opened what was probably the first photography gallery on the East Coast. She also owned a bookstore, which was occasionally staffed by the filmmaker John Waters. Later, Cook became a literary agent to Oliver and other writers. Oliver and Cook lived together for more than forty years.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2025I Have Enjoyed Mary Oliver’s Poetry For Years, The Sweep & Breadth Of It. Her Descriptions Of The Smallest Details Help My Imagination Soar. I Knew About Molly. However, I Had Only Seen A Few Of Her Photographs. Molly’s Photos & Mary’s Poetry & Prose Are Magical. They Complement Each Other & Paint A Fuller Picture Of Life In New England Among Other Writers & Photographers. Although The Book Is Short, I Highly Recommend It. I Would Definitely Buy The Book Again!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2023Mary Oliver’s homage to Mary Malone Cook (MMC) who was her partner and fellow traveler for over 40 years. Beautiful, not sentimental, in part documentary and a life history. Also, this short book draws on MMC’s journals and Mary Oliver’s recollections. The writing is simple, clear, yet poetic. Not over-written. “Less is more” is found here. Also, included are MMC’s wonderful b/w photos. She was very talented. Had a poet’s eye. The photos are a kind of lived poetry. All in all, we see here “the caring of memories” in the very best sense.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2017One of the most beautiful and touching love stories I have ever read. Mary Oliver writes of her and Molly Malone Cook's 40 year relationship shortly after Cook dies. The photographs are by photographer Cook and the text by poet and essayist Oliver. I have read it several times and will continue to read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2015This book is a rich blend of text by Mary Oliver and photos by Molly Malone Cook, her lifetime partner. The photographs let you take in the people and places of a time gone by, and the text, like all of Oliver's writing, is clear, clean, direct, and satisfying. She conveys all her love for the woman she calls "M.", and their life together in the place that was their home. So many scenes of their time with creative, ordinary and extraordinary people. This book is well worth spending time with, and if you love Mary Oliver's work, you'll want "Our World" in your library.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2008I just loved this book. Somehow it opened an intimate window into the life of Molly Malone Cook, without ever disrespecting the sacred nature of her life. Mary Oliver does this with grace. They clearly shared their lives together, yet still kept their individuality intact. Mary Oliver remarks, towards the end of the book, on her own recognised gift for attention. She goes on to pay tribute to Molly for teaching her this: "attention without feeling, I began to learn, is only a report. An openess - an empathy - was necessary is the attention was to matter." This tribute inspires me to continue the journey towards greater presence in my life.

was most especially intrigued by the photos from post-war Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars The photographs selected are wonderful and what a treat it would have been to ...
Simple and eloquent eulogy. Mary Oliver does a superb job of portraying her relationship and life with Molly Cook. The photographs selected are wonderful and what a treat it would have been to meet either of these remarkable women. I love the simplicity of this little book, and the unreserved portrayal of them both.
